KEEPING TIME AT THE SOUTH SIDE CHURCH

A CLOCK, LARGE ENOUGH TO BE VISIBLE OVER THE ENTIRE ASSEMBLY ROOM, HUNG ON THE NORTH WALL. WINDING IT WAS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THOSE WHO DID THE "SERVING" EACH WEEK. IT HAD BEEN PRESENTED TO THE CHURCH ABOUT 1900 BY LOUISE WAIBEL PRIOR TO HER MARRIAGE WITH ANDREW STEFFEN.

MRS. ANDREW STEFFEN DIED AT THE KELSO SANITARIUM BLOOMINGTON, SUNDAY FOLLOWING AN OPERATION FOR GOITRE.

LOUISE WAIBEL WAS BORN IN UBENLINGEN, GERMANY, APRIL 19, 1871, AND CAME WITH HER PARENTS TO AMERICA IN 1883, THE FAMILY LOCATING NEAR CROPSEY. SHE WAS UNITED IN MARRIAGE TO ANDREW W. STEFFEN IN 1903. SHE LEAVES BY HER DEATH HER HUSBAND, FIVE CHILDREN, SAM, CHRIS, ALPHA, CLARA AND EZRA; FIVE BROTHERS AND SISTERS, FRED, NICHOLAS AND MRS. ROBERT BAHLER, OF REMINGTON, IND., GOTTFRIED, OF FORREST, AND MRS. LOUIS KOEHL, OF THIS CITY.

THE FUNERAL SERVICES WERE HELD AT THE SOUTH CHRISTIAN APOSTOLIC CHURCH AND WERE CONDUCTED BY REV. M. MANGOLD.

THE RELATIVES FROM A DISTANCE WHO ATTENDED THE SERVICES WERE, MR. AND MRS. ROBEERT BAHLER AND SON CHRIS AND DAUGHTER TILLIE, MRS. WILLIAM BAHLER, MR. AND MRS. NICHOLAS WAIBEL AND SON GEORGE AND DAUGHTER MINNIE, MR. AND MRS. FRED WAIBEL AND SON AND DAUGHTER, HERMAN AND LOUISE, MR. AND MRS. JOHN CLAUSS, ALVIN CLAUSS, OF REMINGTON, IND.

AFTER THE CLOSING OF THE SOUTH SIDE CHURCH, IN 1949. THE CLOCK WAS GIVEN BACK TO A SON OF LOUISE WAIBEL, ALPHA STEFFEN. THE CLOCK HUNG ON HIS WALL UNTO HIS PASSING.

TODAY THE OLD CLOCK HAS BEEN PASSED TO ALPHA’S SON, WAYNE STEFFEN.

ANDREW STEFFEN, SR. DIED SATURDAY

ANDREW STEFFEN, SR., A WELL KNOWN CITIZEN OF THIS CITY AND THE CROPSEY VICINITY FOR THE PAST 74 YEARS, PASSED AWAY AT HIS HOME, 107 EAST WALNUT STREET, LAST SATURDAY MORNING AT 7:45 O’CLOCK. MR. STEFFEN WHO HAD BEEN IN FALLING HEALTH FOR THE PAST YEAR, WAS AGED 74 YEARS, 7 MONTHS AND 11 DAYS.

ANDREW, SON OF ULRICH AND MARY (WENGER) STEFFEN, WAS BORN NEAR GOODFIELD, AUGUST 17, 1867. WHEN SIX MONTHS OLD HE MOVED WITH HIS PARENTS TO NEAR CROPSEY, THERE MR. STEFFEN RESIDED UNTIL HE MOVED TO HIS LATE HOME IN FAIRBURY THREE YEARS AGO.

MR. STEFFEN WAS FIRST MARRIED TO LYDIA GRIEDER, AND TO THEM WERE BORN FIVE CHILDREN - EDWARD, LENA, MRS. LYDIA BACHTOLD, ANDY AND MRS. HENRY SABO. MRS. STEFFEN PASSED AWAY IN 1901, AND IN 1903 HE WAS MARRIED TO LOUISE WAIBEL. TO THIS UNION WERE ALSO BORN FIVE CHILDREN - SAM, CHRIS, ALPHA, CLARA AND EZRA. ALL OF HIS CHILDREN RESIDE IN THIS VICINITY, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF MRS. SABO, WHO LIVES AT MANSFIELD, OHIO.

MRS. STEFFEN PASSED AWAY IN 1920, AND A FEW YEARS LATER HE MARRIED MARY ANLIKER, WHO SURVIVES.

ALSO SURVIVING ARE A BROTHER AND TWO SISTERS, NAMELY: ALBERT STEFFEN, OF CROPSEY, AND MRS. CARL HUBER AND MRS. GOTTFRIED HARI, OF STRAWN.

FUNERAL SERVICES WERE HELD AT THE SOUTH APOSTOLIC CHRISTIAN CHURCH ON MONDAY AFTERNOON AT ONE O’CLOCK AND INTERMENT WAS IN THE SOUTH APOSTOLIC CHRISTIAN CEMETERY.

HIS FUNERAL WAS AT 10 A. M. SATURDAY AT THE APOSTOLIC CHRISTIAN CHURCH, IN FAIRBURY, WITH MINISTERS OF THE CHURCH OFFICIATING. BURIAL WAS IN SOUTH APOSTOLIC CHRISTIAN CEMETERY, RURAL FAIRBURY.

VISITATION WAS FROM 4 TO 8 P. M. FRIDAY AT DUFFY-PILS MEMORIAL HOME, FAIRBURY, AND FOR ONE HOUR BEFORE THE SERVICES SATURDAY AT THE CHURCH.

MR. STEFFEN WAS BORN APRIL 6, 1911, IN CROPSEY, A SON OF ANDREW AND LOUISE WAIBEL STEFFEN. HE MARRIED ALDINE E. ZEHR DEC. 4, 1938, IN FAIRBURY. SHE SURVIVES.

MR. STEFFEN WAS A LIFETIME FARMER IN THE CROPSEY AREA, RETIRING IN 1973. HE ALSO HAD DRIVEN A SCHOOL BUS FOR FAIRBURY - CROPSEY SCHOOL DISTRICT FOR MANY YEARS. HE WAS A MEMBER OF THE APOSTOLIC CHRISTIAN CHURCH, FAIRBURY.

MRS. LOUIS KOEHL, SR., FOR MANY YEARS A CITIZEN HIGHLY RESPECTED IN THIS COMMUNITY, PASSED AWAY AT HER LATE HOME ON WEST WALNUT STREET LAST FRIDAY EVENING AT 7:30 O’CLOCK, AT THE AGE OF 65 YEARS, 8 MONTHS AND 4 DAYS.

MARY WAIBEL WAS BORN IN UEBERLINGEN, GERMANY, AUGUST 15TH, 1863 .. SHE SPENT TWENTY YEARS OF HER LIFE IN HER NATIVE COUNTRY, COMING TO AMERICA IN 1883, AND LOCATING IN FAIRBURY, WHERE SHE HAD SINCE RESIDED. HERE ON DECEMBER 27, 1891, SHE WAS UNITED IN MARRIAGE TO LOUIS KOEHL, WHO SURVIVES HER TOGETHER WITH THE FOLLOWING CHILDREN: PAUL, LOUIS, JR., AND MRS. SAM ZIMMERMAN, ALL OF FORREST. THERE ALSO SURVIVES ONE STEPDAUGHTER, MRS. CARL SCHAUBLE, OF SAUNEMIN, AND ONE BROTHER AND ONE SISTER, NAMELY, FRED WAIBEL AND MRS. ROBERT BAHLER, BOTH OF REMINGTON, IND.

THE FUNERAL SERVICES WERE HELD AT THE CHRISTIAN APOSTOLIC CHURCH MONDAY MORNING, MANY BEING PRESENT TO PAY THEIR RESPECTS TO THE DECEASED, WHO AS A WIFE, MOTHER AND FRIEND WILL BE MISSED IN HER EVERYDAY WALK OF LIFE. INTERMENT WAS IN GRACELAND.

GOTTFRIED WAIBEL, RESIDING ON EAST MAPLE STREET, AND WHO HAS BEEN ILL FOR A LONG TIME, PASSED AWAY LAST NIGHT. THE FUNERAL WILL BE HELD SUNDAY.

GOTTFRIED WAIBEL, WHOSE DEATH WAS NOTED IN LAST WEEK’S ISSUE OF THE BLADE, WAS BORN IN BADEN, GERMANY, OCTOBER 23, 1867, AND PASSED AWAY AT HIS HOME IN THIS CITY LAST THURSDAY EVENING, MARCH 27, AT THE AGE OF 56 YEARS, 5 MILES AND 4 DAYS.

MR. WAIBEL GREW TO YOUNG MANHOOD IN HIS NATIVE COUNTRY AND IN 1883 CAME WITH HIS PARENTS TO AMERICA AND SETTLED AT FAIRBURY. ON FEBRUARY 11, 1896, HE WAS UNITED IN MARRIAGE TO MISS MARGARET CLAUSS, WHO PASSED AWAY FEBRUARY 8. THE FOLLOWING CHILDREN SURVIVE: MRS. EMIL ROEKER, PEORIA; MRS. PAUL HONEGGER AND CARL WAIBEL, OF FORREST; MISS HILDA AND JOHN, AT HOME ALSO TWO GRANDCHILDREN, HARRY WAIBEL AND MILDRED HONEGGER. THE FOLLOWING BROTHERS AND SISTERS ALSO SURVIVE: MRS. ROBERT BAHLER, NICHOLAS AND FRED WAIBEL, OF REMINGTON, IND., MRS. LOUIS KOEHL, FAIRBURY. ONE SISTER, MRS. LOUIS STEFFEN DIED TWO YEARS AGO.

FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS MR. WAIBEL AND FAMILY RESIDED NEAR FORREST, MOVING TO THIS CITY LAST DECEMBER. HE WAS AN EXCELLENT FATHER AND A GOOD NEIGHBOR AND FRIEND AND HELD THE ESTEEM AND RESPECT OF A LARGE NUMBER OF FRIENDS.

THE FUNERAL SERVICES WERE HELD AT THE CHRISTIAN APOSTOLIC CHURCH IN THIS CITY ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON AND WERE LARGELY ATTENDED, MANY BEING PRESENT FROM AWAY. SERVICES WERE IN CHARGE OF REV. WAGLER AND REV. SLAGEL, INTERMENT WAS IN GRACELAND CEMETERY.
